Self-Tape TIPS

If you're an actor auditioning today, odds are you're submitting a self-taped audition—and the quality of your tape can make or break your chances.
At ActorIntro, a professional self-tape studio in NYC, we’ve shot hundreds of actor auditions since 2009.
Here’s our guide to helping you deliver a standout performance on camera.
Want your self-tape done right the first time?
Why Self-Tape Auditions Matter More Than Ever
Casting has changed. More auditions are now remote, and that means actors are judged on both performance and video quality. A poor recording can send the wrong message—like “I’m not ready” or “I don’t care enough.” But a strong, polished self-tape can make you stand out before you even walk into the room.
Self-Tape Setup Tips from a Pro
Brad Holbrook, Emmy-winning journalist and actor, shares his top technical and performance insights:
Use a Quiet, Controlled Space
Avoid background noise, echoey rooms, or distractions. A carpeted room with drapes and a blank wall works best. Better yet, use a dedicated self-tape studio.
Sit, Don’t Stand
Staying seated helps keep you “grounded.” The camera typically frames you from clavicle up, so no one will know you’re sitting—but your presence will feel more focused.
Get the Framing Right
Center your face so that your shoulders fill the frame horizontally, with your nose near the center. This creates a casting-friendly close-up.
Don’t Audition into the Camera
Always look just off-camera, toward your reader. Avoid making direct eye contact with the lens unless specifically requested.
Use a Lav Mic (Not the Camera’s Mic)
Clear audio is non-negotiable. Use a corded or wireless lavaliere mic for crisp, clean sound. Bad audio can sink a great performance.
Memorization, Wardrobe, and Delivery Tips
Memorize (If Possible)
Casting directors expect fluency. If you have the chance to do multiple takes, your final cut should be near perfect.
Dress Simply
No logos, no distracting patterns. Choose solid colors that keep the focus on your face and performance.
Implied Physicality
Don’t overact. Use real props when necessary (like a phone), but keep movements subtle and grounded.
